Having compound weapons undermines the honesty of a nation. Letââ¬â¢s take the case of Iran to make sense of how much strain having substance weapons can make for the nation itself and for the remainder of the world. Iran has just been seeing tense relationship with U.S. furthermore, its partners, since the Iranian Revolution that happened in the late 1970s. The danger to Iranââ¬â¢s solidarity expanded when President Bush pronounced it as a component of ââ¬Å"Axis of Evilâ⬠(WBGH instructive establishment 2013, par.2). This danger didn't diminish with the political race bringing Barrack Obama in administration. The idea that has additionally set off the choice of U.S. war with Iran is Iranââ¬â¢s mission in atomic innovation. Iranââ¬â¢s obtaining concoction weapons, as indicated by U.S., will be a danger to worldââ¬â¢s harmony. Indeed, even the partners of U.S. - England, Germany, and France-are stressed over this atomic province of Iran. ... Iran isn't turning into an atomic force (Henderson 2013); and in this manner, it won't bear any dangers from the outer world, still dangers win since Iran has been making military buys from Washington and Gulf Arab, and has been making military moves. This shows how being associated with and having substance weapons undermines the dependability and respectability of a nation. In addition, having substance weapons makes a feeling of threatening vibe among nations of the world. USA has just gone into wars with various nations because of this explanation, and this has destabilized those nations and has likewise put harming impacts upon the American economy. Going into struggle upsets the harmony, of Iran as well as of U.S., who has just lost the lives of huge numbers of its warriors in military activities against Iraq and Afghanistan. Americans will never endure if the right number of losses of American officers in the war on fear is uncovered to them (Nouraee 2010). Nature of antagonis tic vibe achieved by substance weapons just expands disdain, and empowers the occupants of the assaulted nation to create defiant sentiments. This doesn't help decline fear based oppression, yet expands viciousness and radical threatening vibe. It just transforms into a worldwide detest battle. Likewise, U.S. has just been experiencing money related weight as a result of substantial spending plans being alloted to war on fear. Besides, in view of expanded worldwide rivalry and orderly interest to build benefit by diminishing the primary concern; it is a reality important that contention in the cutting edge working environment is like never before liable to be owing to both in-battling about constrained assets bases inside and between firm units and reduced open doors for stable employment(Daniel, 2001). Recorded as a hard copy about compromise, Daniel talked about around three compromise hypotheses which include: power challenges, rights challenge and intrigue compromise. In this paper, the primary spotlight will be on intrigue compromise as a method of settling struggle. In attempting to comprehend ways for settling struggle, the paper will utilize the 1926 United Kingdom general strike for instance. Conversation Interest compromise, as per Daniel, is perhaps the best technique for settling either by and by or at hierarchical level. The intrigue compromise hypothesis includes a urgent advance of perceiving potential for irreconcilable circumstance. In numerous examples, successful compromise can have any kind of effect among negative and positive results (Daniel, 2001). Coming up next is some practical advances that emerge from intrigue compromise as a method of settling struggle, as lifted from crafted by Daniel (2001). This for the most part applies to association or government establishments as the instance of 1926 UK struggle. Build up an unmistakable arrangement on revelation, with the goal that all the partners realize what outside intrigue must be revealed. This is vital in light of the fact that occasionally influenced gatherings may have not perceived the contention or didn't uncover it in great time. Convey this data or approach to every single that is influenced by the contention either l egitimately or by implication. This will make the data accessible to the world on the loose. Keep the approach proportionate. For instance, it might emerge that an individual who has a clashing interest should simply oust himself from a dynamic procedure or a specific gathering. The subsequent stage is to build up an unmistakable strategy that will deal with the circumstance by guaranteeing that an individual doesn't uncover clashing interest. The 1926 UK general strike was a general strike that kept going nine days. It was a contention between general gathering of the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the British government. The fundamental zone of contention was the interest by the TUC to constrain the administration to forestall the compensation decrease and declining conditions for 800,000 bolted out coal diggers. The laborers kept up obstruction for a couple of months before their own monetary requests constrained them to return to the mines. On May 1926, the worker's guild congre ss declared that the strike was canceled after an arrival to work recipe was created among them and the British government. This was after intensive conference with the concerned gatherings and after some intrigue has been fulfilled. As can be noticed, the above model is genuine portrayal of how intrigue compromise can be utilized to determine clashes. Both the TUC and the British government had distinctive enthusiasm from the outset. In any case, with the development of contention, they had to accommodate their Hattie Tricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08647167614394798415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-295041434384858414.post-47808517093414465282020-08-21T05:42:00.003-07:002020-08-21T05:42:04.946-07:00Summer Reflections 2010 Post #4 COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions BlogSummer Reflections 2010 Post #4 COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog John Hughes just graduated from SIPA and during his second year of study worked in our office. Iâm ecstatic that the U.S. managed to make it through to the next round, and look forward to watching the match against Ghana on Saturday. I know people often use the cliché of the World Cup as a symbol of international unity that brings people together in a shared experience. Though this vision is sometimes overhyped, I think it holds true in many ways. The World Cup, unfortunately, is only a month long once every four years. Here at SIPA, however, we similarly bring people together from all over the world in a shared experience every day. Admittedly, this too may be a cliché about international affairs schools, but after having spent two years at SIPA (and doing quite a bit of research on our rival schools before deciding to come here) I can honestly say that the multicultural, shared experience is an absolute positive for the program and one that truly sets SIPA apart. When I go to watch the US/Ghana game tomorrow Iâll do it with the perspective of having quite a few friends from SIPA from Ghana and having had extensive conversations with some of them about what the country is truly like. Though this wonât necessarily change how I watch the game, it certainly adds a perspective that I would not have had if I had not come to SIPA. And this is just one example. SIPA has students from over 70 countries each year with backgrounds and interests as varied as you can imagine. Every student brings something else to the school, each enriching classroom discussions, group work and general social situations in his or her own way. In a school of International and Public Affairs I wouldnât want it any other way. This is not a place where Americans discuss world âproblemsâ from an American perspective. Though we Americans certainly have opinions and voice them regularly, these opinions are joined by those from South Korea, Argentina, Jordan, Kyrgyzstan, Spain, Tanzania and China to name a few. Similarly, when events happen around the world it is likely that somebody from the country in question will be present to give a valuable perspective. A discussion on financial reforms in âemerging marketsâ takes on a whole new perspective when more than half the class comes from such places and many will likely help shape the very reforms being discussed in the future. Similarly, when the topic of security along the Afghanistan/Pakistan border comes up it is invaluable to have classmates from both countries chime in. Many international affairs schools tout the diversity of their student body. However, I am certain that very few come close to having students from as many countries as SIPA, or can boast that international students make up half the student body. Though the academics at SIPA are certainly top-notch, I found that the truly international student body was what really made the experience great for me. Elsa Nyongesa Ms. Fernandes ENG 121 Period 7 16 November 2018 Declaration of Independence When in the course of human events, it has become necessary for me to emancipate myself from my parents. I have been subjected to sixteen years of my parents tyranny which has made my life less than content. I have come to find their incessant nagging intolerable and their rules to be very restrictive. I have reached a point in my life where freedom is more than a want. It is a need that can only be met by dissolving the constraining links that have connected me with my parents. I shall now explain the causes of my need to declare independence from my parents. I hold these truths to be evident: that all teens are created equal and have had to live with certain alienated rights, with the most important one being the right to exercise their free will at all times. This involves, but is not limited to the right to go wherever they please, whenever they please. Additionally, they have the right to choose which chores are important and need to be done at that moment rather than be forced to do tedious tasks. Another vital right is self-governance. They should be able to set their own expectations and do what they can to meet them instead of having to live under their parents dictatorship. To prove this, let facts be submitted to a candid world. Thanks to my parents, my social life outside of school is severely lacking. I have been forbidden from going to my friends house. I have been restrained from going out to places such as the mall, or the movies with my friends. I have also been prohibited from communicating with certain people simply because my parents thought it fit. Over the years, my parents have hindered my pursuit of happiness by keeping me from being involved with my friends outside of school. They are constantly pushing me to challenge myself and strive to get high honor roll. An A-minus is not enough in the eyes of my parents. An A average only satiates them temporarily. On top of these overly high expectations, my parents expect me to fulfill a handful amount of chores every day. I find it incomprehensible that they expect me to be on top of my school work at all times, yet they are constantly nagging me for not having time to do chores because of my workload. Nor have I been wanting in attentions to my severely restricted life. I constantly plead with my parents to let me out. However, they have been deaf to the voice of reason. I have gone to great lengths, trying to appease my friends. I have done all my chores which did nothing to impress them because they considered it as an obligation rather than a simple courtesy. I have also tried to exceed their academic expectations by doing all my work and getting high honor roll. Unfortunately, they also dismissed my achievements as if I had no other option than to attain them. I, therefore, have concluded that I ought to be free from my parents dictatorship. I hope that by being e mancipated from my parents, I might acquire the kind of life, liberty, and happiness that I have been deprived of for the past sixteen years. I hope to be free to spend time with my friends whenever I feel like it. I would also want to be able to choose what chores are worth doing ut at the time and which ones are not. Additionally, I would like to be able to set my own expectations instead of trying to live in my parents image. For the support of this declaration, I pledge my life and my freedoms because neither would mean anything under my parents strict rule. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Definition and origin of Social Darwinism III. Overemphasis on Social Darwinism B. Relied on Christian and other arguments During the late 19th, and early 20th century, the United States experienced agrowth of industry like it has never seen before. New patents and inventionsflourished. New products flooded the market. While thousands of poor, hungry, and unemployed crowded the streets, the rich were busy displayingtheir enormous wealth. Even though the need for reform was overwhelming, for the majority of Americans, nothing was being done. The big bosses wereable to buy off the politicians and persuade them to vote in the ir favor. Whilethe rich were getting richer, and the poor getting poorer, the politicianswatched. The need for a justification of the enormous wealth of a few and anunimaginable poverty of millions was, as many tended to believe, fulfilled bythe emergence of a theory called Social Darwinism, which on one hand wasregarded as a primary defense of business activities, and on the other, wasnothing more than a myth. Social Darwinism, the experts say, was ashort-lived theory of social evolution, vigorously discussed in America, which rationalized and justified the harsh facts of social stratification in anattempt to reconcile them with the prevalent ideology of equalitarianism. Theemergence of Social Darwinism was perhaps the most visible effect on thesocial sciences of Charles Darwins The Origin of Species (Tax and Krucoff402). In simple terms, Social Darwinism was an application (many believe amisapplication) of Charles Darwins laws of evolution and natural selection tohuman society. In his most famous book The Origin of Species, Darwinincluded four major arguments: that new species appear; that these newspecies have evolved from older species; that the evolution of species is theresult of natural selection; and that natural selection depends upon variationsand the maintenance of variation in spite of the tendency of natural selectionto eliminate unfit variants (403). Darwin explains the process of naturalAs many more individuals of each species are born that can possibly survive;and as, consequently, there is a frequently recurring struggle for existence, itfollows that any being, if it vary however slightly in any manner profitable toitself, under the complex and sometimes varying conditions of life, will havea better chance of surviving, and thus be naturally selected. From the strongprinciple of inheritance, any selected variety will tend to propagate its newAccording to Darwin, natural selection is depended on the struggle forexistence among individuals. Any o rganism that is able to obtain thenecessary resources, often at the expense of other organisms, will survive, reproduce and pass on the favored qualities onto its offspring (theprinciple of inheritance). In short, the weak, unfit will die, and the strong, will continue its existence. This whole theory was summarized in one laconicphrase survival of the fittest. For almost a decade before Darwins TheOrigin of Species was the first published in 1859, a well educatedEnglishman named Herbert Spencer had been writing about the doctrine ofevolution. He was first ever to use the popular phrase survival of the fittestand was among the first to apply the doctrine of evolution to human society. Along with William Graham Sumner, they portrayed the society as an arenain which individuals struggled and where the fittest survived. They agreedthat from within societies, the businessmen proved to be the fittest. Sumneronce said, The men who have not done their duty in this world never can beequal to those who have done their duty. The class distinctions simplyresult from the different degrees of success with which men have availedthemselves of the chances which were presented to them. Their doctrinestated that the government should not interfere, and help the less fit (and bydoing so hurting the society). It should maintain a laissez faire policy. Therecould be no laws to help the poor. There could be no laws to regulate thebusinesses for they created artificial barriers to natural selection of thestrongest firms. Competition would regulate the industry. Others followedwith their opposition to tariffs, trade regulations, state banking, governmentpostal services etc,. (Bryant, Jr. and Dethloff 253). Those, at that time verycontroversial issues, brought them, but especially Spencer, a lot of negativepublicity. In 1875, the economist John Elliott Cairnes announced thatSpencer transferred laws of physiology to the domain of social science. Tenyears later, the Belgian sociologist, Emile de Laveleye added that Spencerwas anxious to see the law of the survival of the fittest and of naturalselection adopted in human society. A number of intellectuals andsociologists had later accused Spencer and Summner of supporting the unjustand brutally individualistic regime of Spencarianism or Social Darwinism(Bannister 34-36) There were of course scholars who supported the ideas ofSpencer and Sumner. Even Charles Darwin who in his The Origin of Speciespurpously avoided the issues of social evolution later addressed them in hisbook The Descent of Man in a key chapter titled On the Development of theIntellectual and Moral Faculties. Darwin recognized the argument that if onewer e to apply the laws of survival of the fittest and natural selection tosociety, should the society preserve its weaker members? The key passagefrom The Descent of Man reads as follows: With savages, the weak in bodyor mind are soon eliminated; and those that survive commonly exhibit avigorous state of health. We civilized men, on the other hand, do our utmostto check the process of elimination; we build asylums for the imbecile, themaimed, and the sick; we institute poor-laws; and our medical men exerttheir utmost skill to save the life of everyone to the last moment. Thus, theweak members of civilized societies propagate their kind. No one who hasattended to the breeding of domestic animals will doubt that this must behighly injurious to the race of man. It is surprising how soon a want of care,or care wrongly directed, leads to the degeneration of a domestic race; butexcepting in the case of man himself, hardly anyone is so ignorant as to allowhis worst animals to breed (qtd. in B annister 30) Clearly, even Charles Darwin wasnt ignorant toward the reasoning behindSocial Darwinism. He never really stated whether he fully supported it orwere against it. Historians tend to believe that his opinion laid somewhere inbetween (Bannister 30-31). Social Darwinism in United States goes hand inhand with the Gilded Age and with the rise of the industry. The Gilded Age,the period from 1865 to 1901, was an era of great industrial and economicgrowth for America. It was an era of numerous inventions and patents. It wasalso an era of extreme riches for some, and of wretched poverty for others. Itwas an era of the Robber Barons, as Matthew Josephson called them. Oneof such Robber Barons was John D. Rockefeller. With his savings of$5,000, at a very young age John D. Rockefeller opened his first oil refinery. Fingerprints EssayOthers, however, when called upon to justify their activities, fell upon oldarguments like Christian virtues and moral platitudes, that in no waycorrelated with Social Darwinism (Wyllie 157-169). Its interesting to readabout men like Carnegie or Rockefeller, who regarded themselves as trueSocial Darwinists. Men who on one hand promoted the idea of regulatingindustry by competition (the very essence of social darwinism), and on theother devoted their lives to eliminating competition from within their ownindustries. Men who spent two thirds of their lives cheating, buying offpoliticians, and growing enormously rich at the price of making others poor. Men who then retired, and became philanthropists, and gave away hundredsof millions of their lifetime earnings. And finally men who were bookishand intelligent enough to use the theory of Social Darwinism to justify theirruthless and unfair business practices. Unfortunately, there were only veryfew men like that. Social Darwinism, was in fact only a short-lived theory;nothing more than a greatly overemphasized myth, given much more creditAndrew Carnegie: The Principles of Industrial and Social ProgressIllustrated by His Career. However, criminal justice system (police) establishes and maintains ethical standards to suggest such manners. There are several ways through which the police help to solve and settle those issues. The judicial system (police) in a society allows actions done in order through lawful means. The police are personnel who have been entrusted with the duty to provide law and order in society by implementing the law. They also have the right to exercise their duty in a fair and just way without favor of any group or party. However, these personnel are covered with code of ethics and conduct that they must attend to as expected. The code of ethics act as the overall supervisor. Police officers are persons who have undergone training of acquiring proficiencies and tactics that help them to provide the best attention to the people in a society. The training they undergo enables them to deal with law breakers in different ways. Since police officers are trained persons, ethical doctrines play an important responsibility in their work. While ethical standards involve identifying what is good from the wrong, people are expected to prefer doing the things in the right manner by avoiding the wrong deeds. People from different societies have different ways of life and doctrines; however, people confined to the same place have a set of rules that govern their coexistence. These ways of life and doctrines allow the police officers to put into force the law and order. In order to put into force these ways of life and doctrines, the police officers must, therefore, stick to their way of service always by lawful means and not because of their opinion or moods. The basi s of the way of service by police officers provides framework on the desired behaviors they should stick to while attending to the people. Moreover, the police officers normally take the oath of justice after training that allows them Hattie Tricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08647167614394798415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-295041434384858414.post-19685325193363850172020-02-05T01:12:00.001-08:002020-02-05T01:12:02.708-08:00Is mountain climbing a heroic or selfish act Research PaperIs mountain climbing a heroic or selfish act - Research Paper Example One of the mountaineers, a sick man, after the avalanche passed away, told his friends, ââ¬Å"I was going to unclip and get it over with,â⬠as they were holding together with just a single ice-screw. Mark Twight, one of the mountaineers of the Rupal Face, like the British mountaineer, Joe Simpson, also shares the same feeling that the sport is for personal and ââ¬Å"super-selfishâ⬠glory. Success of mountaineers is celebrated in royal way; they are rewarded and awarded in a magnanimous way (Coffey, 2003, p. 68-69). According to the Oxford English Dictionary, a hero is a person who ââ¬Å"exhibits extra-ordinary bravery, firmness, fortitude, and greatness of soul in any action.â⬠Mountaineering presents such heroic opportunities innumerably. Alex Lowe set an example of sheer bravery, fortitude and greatness of soul in rescuing the Spanish climbers; he carried one collapsed climber on his back on the thirty-five degree slopes of ice and snow for hundred vertical feet to deliver the climber to the Park Service although the climber had collapsed. Such herculean tasks can be accomplished by a true hero only (Coffey, 2003, p. 70). Alex Loweââ¬â¢s extra-ordinary stamina, drive, and capability as a climber were outstanding. Another name attached to the mountaineering heroism is that of Alison Hargreaves, the only women to climb Mount Everest by her own without oxygen in 1995 (Coffey, 2003). Alison was the second woman to reach Mount Everest without oxygen and on her own; the first legendry woman was Reinhold Messner. Criticism of such heroic personalities is widely attempted by media, as the tragedy pounces upon their lives. The same thing happened to Alison. Successful adventures were glorified beyond limit but as soon as defeat surfaced in the form of loosing the life while performing the adventurous task of mountaineering, the woman was criticized by press for leaving behind two small kids. Incorporating values and ethics into any business has become very important to corporate organisations, government, and the public in general. As the world becomes ever smaller as a result of globalization, there has been an increase in the movement of labour, knowledge and technology from country to country. This has lead to companies setting up factories in countries with cheap labour and very poor human right laws so they can meet the demand for their product. Government of these poor countries have been forced to dance to the tune of large business. Business ethic emerged as a result of the abuse of human rights and because of the need for corporate organisation to be more ethical and humane in doing business. This has come to the fore front in recent time with the media keeping a constant look out for corporate organisations that abuse or refuse to up hold their social responsibilities in any way. As a result of this organisations now pay more attention to business ethic education and training in order to meet this ever growing ethical responsibility. The growth and development of businesses worldwide has brought about an increase in the standard of living but on the other hand it has resulted in the abuse of workers in many parts of the world. Corporate social responsibility has enter a new phase in which the responsibility of business have to be clearly defined. According to Andrew chapman and Scott Jerbi there are growing expectation that corporation should do everything their powers to promote universal human rights standards even in conflict situation where governance structure have broken down. War on Want has published research which shows that Bangladeshi workers making clothes for Primark, Tesco and Asda toil up to 80 hours a week and earn as little as half a living wage. http://uk.oneworld.net/article/view 4/04/2010 War on Want senior campaigns officer Simon McRae said: ââ¬Å"British companies continue to commit serious human rights abuses across the world. Yet the governments only response is to come up with voluntary initiatives which companies are free to ignore. When will ministers take real action to hold these companies to account?â⬠For any market place to be effective there has to be ethical behaviour on the part of buyers and sellers. According to Solomon (1996) ethical behaviour on the part of both buyers and sellers is tantamount to the effectiveness of the market place. Regardless of the degree of the competition, the successful functioning of the market place rest on the foundation of mutually agreed- upon rules of conduct and shared interest. For the relationship to remain beneficial to both parties it has to be of value to both of them. Unethical behaviour by either party disrupts the relationship and produces exchanges that are both unproductive and ineffective (Morgan and Hunt, 1994) Journal of business ethics: Sam fullerton, KatShleen B kerch,H Robert Dodge 805-814, 1996 II. Structure of the report The report is a focus on the retail cloth industry in relation to its business ethics. Which if not up held by any company will damage its brand image and bring about a loss of confidence by customers. Other chapters will talk on recent discussions on business ethics and how consumers view human right standards as regards consumption of products making use of journals, internet, reports etc. The aim is to bring out the different theories and views by various authors for better understanding. Although surrogacy was first brought up in the bible it is only until recently that it has actually become an issue for criticism and debate. Factors such as the growth of infertility in modern society, coupled with the declining number of children available for adoption, and the development of surrogacy contract and commercial surrogacy agencies in 1976, have resulted in increasing publicity and public interest in the formation of agreements between infertile couples and surrogate mothers (Stuhmcke, 3). Surrogate motherhood can be approached in more than one way, and some surrogacy procedures receive more condemnation than others. à à à à à One type of surrogacy is when an egg is extracted from the infertile female and placed in a petri dish and is then fertilized by the fertile maleââ¬â¢s sperm, the fertilized egg is then placed into the fertile femaleââ¬â¢s uterus so she can give birth to the child. This procedure is done when the uterus of a female is in some way defective, but her eggs are in fine condition, this is called invitro fertilization surrogacy or IVF surrogacy (Hanafin, 3). IVF surrogacy, or total surrogacy is the procedure that receives the least criticism because the baby is in no way related to its carrier. The more comm... My philosophy of life probably influenced my decision because I believe that everyone deserves a second chance. Creon was arrogant and did not listen to anyoneââ¬â¢s advice, including Tiresias, a prophet who has never told him a lie. However, in the end he realized what had happened and accepted his fate. Creon was just recently appointed king so I guess he was trying to set a good example by sentencing Antigone to death. He didnââ¬â¢tââ¬â¢ want the people to think he was a person who made exceptions to their own ruling. A part of me did not want to forgive Creon, because what he did was rotten. He turned against his own family. I could never send a family member to jail or even worse, death. Creonââ¬â¢s punishment was quite harsh. All of the people close to him died. His son and daughter died and that was when he realized what kind of mistake he had made. He went against the morals of the people, ignored advice from his family members as well as a prophet who has never been wrong. His obstinate decision led him towards his downfall. In the end Creon knew that it was his fault that every one around him died. It was too late to regret now, so he accepted his punishment. I donââ¬â¢t think that the punishment was suitable because it was too extreme. Image if everyone in your family died because you made a poor decision. No one is perfect, that is why they put erasers on top of your pencils. I believe everyone should deserve a second chance, even if that someone is Creon. In most countries worldwide, prostitution is illegal. Despite this, prostitution is still active in every single state, and every single part of the world. Sex work plays a key role of the sexism in American, and worldwide cultures. The criminalization of prostitution has created an underworld of illegal activity, that has traumatic consequences on an estimated one million prostitutes. This criminalizing also affects innocent individuals, for fear of police harassment. Many are forced into the sex trade against their will, are threatened, drugged, or worse if they attempt to leave. In these situations, the sex worker has no control, consent, autonomy of their body, or virtually any free will. This crisis goes back across the ages, and is anachronistic in todayââ¬â¢s society. How to handle this crisis, in America, has spurred many conflicting ideas and debates, for and against legalizing and regulating prostitution. If this came to pass, many injustices would be ramified and would take the country farther than ever before in gender equality. Other countries take a cue from America, the closer the U.S getââ¬â¢s to equal rights for all- the faster humanity gets to worldwide human rights.. I argue the best way to begin fixing this crisis, is to legalize, regulate, and most importantly, ending the demonizing of this profession. The average area farmed by specialty as recorded in the table entail that crop farm is one-fourth of the average for all plant production. The average for livestock farms is about 2,200 acres which is influenced by large cattle ranches (Moss et al. , 2012, 16-18). In fact, a number of poets used the style in creating the various themes such as death, life, time and sexuality. More importantly, some of the poems even adopted the sexual innuendos as a way of looking at the sexuality indirectly. For instance, the poem ââ¬Å"To His Coy Mistressâ⬠by Andrew Marvell reveals multiple themes that insist that people should use their time effectively. More specifically, it illustrates mortality and how death is inevitable, insisting individuals should enjoy the pleasures the world offers, especially sex. Robert Herrickââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"To the Virgins, to Make Much of Timeâ⬠also insists that virgins should use their time well and ensure that death does not end any plans they had. John Donneââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Fleaâ⬠uses the image of a flea and the mixing of blood and fluids to persuade a girl into having sex. Even ââ¬Å"The Passionate Shepherd to His Loveâ⬠by Christopher Marlowe captures the theme of Carpe Diem, which insists on the swift passage of time and the need to use every opportunity effectively. All in all, the four poems use sexual innuendos to help in reducing the derogatory nature of such poems. Instead, the imagery used help in addressing sexuality indirectly, and helps in making the poems more presentable. Is this true or not? A compelling argument will be made by this Author to show that in his perception that children are growing up too fast. THESIS STATEMENT An examination of trends in current teenage behavior; in order to prove that children are growing up too fast. Hymowitz (1998) discussed his experiences of a daughter who in his generalised assessment ââ¬Å"morphed from child to teenagerâ⬠(p. 212). This theme resonated throughout his writings in the article ââ¬Å"Tweens: Ten gong on Sixteenâ⬠. In one particular instance, Hymowitz (1998) cited statements attributed to Henry Trevor, a school director who stated ââ¬Å"there is no such thing as preadolescence anymore, kids are teenagers at tenâ⬠. I support the thesis statement of early development of the current teenage generation, given the preponderance of literature which supports such thinking. We will write a custom essay sample on Are Children Growing Up Too fast or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page For example, research by the Sunday Sun (2011) established that children were growing up too quickly due to a combination of factors such as ââ¬Å"combination of early testing in school, advertising, bad childcare, and a reliance on computer games and televisionâ⬠(p. 1). In another research by Hughes (2009) she supported discussions by Hymowitz (1998) and the Sunday Sun (2011) on the noted changes in behavioral patterns of current teenagers as opposed to their predecessors. Further, bestselling author Dame Jacqueline Wilson ( 2008) writing for the Birmingham Post in a poll found that ââ¬Å"more than half of parents believe childhood is now over by 11â⬠( p. 1), a view which endorses my contention that children are growing up much faster than their predecessors given a multiplicity of factors. In this example through the admission of the majority of Parents surveyed. My own experiences having raised three children, two girls and a boy have shown that access by them to technology such as the computer, other technological devices and access to the internet and television programming have contributed to aspects of their own self development which were not available to their predecessors and in my own considered judgment, based on these developments allow for a level of maturity beyond their young ages. Given the observations on growing p too fast, as discussed above and inclusive of research and findings by Hymowitz (1998) which articulated on trends observed n the society in which his daughter grew up, supporting discussions by the Sunday Sun ( 2011); Hughes (2009); Wilson ( 2008) and my own experiences in observing the phenomena of children maturing at an earlier age than their predecessors, I submit and support the thesis statement that children are growing up much faster currently than their predecessors based on the evidence provided in the discussion which support such conclusions. The phenomena of young children developing a more matured status as opposed to their predecessors have been noted by a number of researchers. This development have been attributed to a number of factors related to technology, exposure to activities through various technological means which enhance their own education and even the attitude by parents, which allow for a more matured development of children at an earlier age than was done for previous generations of children. The resultant has been the development of young children who are matured beyond their ages, based on their current behavioral trends and support the theme that they are growing up too fast when compared with children of similar ages n the past. There are many estate planning tools you can use to transfer your business. Selecting the right one will depend on whether you plan to retire from the business or keep it until you die. Perhaps you have children or other family members who wish to continue the business after your death.Obviously, youll want to transfer your business to your successors at its full value. However, with income, gift, and potential estate taxes, it takes careful planning to prevent some (or all) of the business assets from being sold to pay them, perhaps leaving little for your beneficiaries. Therefore, business succession planning must include ways not only to ensure the continuity of your business, but also to do so with the smallest possible tax consequences. Som e of the more common strategies for minimizing taxes are explained briefly in the following sections.Remember, none are without drawbacks. Youll want to consult a tax professional as well as your estate planning attorney to explore all strategies. This allows your beneficiaries more time to raise sufficient funds or obtain more favorable interest rates. The business must exceed 35 percent of your gross estate and must meet other requirements to qualify. Selling your business interest outright When you sell your business interest to a family member or someone else, you receive cash (or assets you can convert to cash) that can be used to maintain your lifestyle or pay your estate taxes. You choose when to sellnow, at your retirement, at your death, or anytime in between. As long as the sale is for the full fair market value (FMV) of the business, it is not subject to gift tax or estate tax. But if the sale occurs before your death, it may be subject to capital gains tax. Transferring y our business interest with a buy-sell agreement A buy-sell agreement is a legal contract that prearranges the sale of your business interest between you and a willing buyer.A buy-sell agreement lets you keep control of your interest until the occurrence of an event that the agreement specifies, such as your retirement, disability, or death. Other events like divorce can also be included as triggering events under a buy-sell agreement. When the triggering event occurs, the buyer is obligated to buy your interest from you or your estate at the FMV. The buyer can be a person, a group (such as co-owners), or the business itself. Price and sale terms are prearranged, which eliminates the need for a fire sale if you become ill or when you die.Remember, you are bound under a buy-sell agreement: You cant sell or give your business to anyone except the buyer named in the agreement without the buyers consent. This could restrict your ability to reduce the size of your estate through lifetime gifts of your business interest, unless you carefully coordinate your estate planning goals with the terms of your buy-sell agreement. There are many estate planning tools you can use to transfer your business. Selecting the right one will depend on whether you plan to retire from the business or keep it until you die.You and your estate may get some relief under the Internal Revenue Code If you are prepared to begin transferring some of your business interest to your beneficiaries, a systematic gifting program can help accomplish this while minimizing the gift tax liability that might otherwise be incurred. This is done by utilizing your ability to gift up to $12,000 per year per recipient without incurring gift tax. By transferring portions of your business in this manner, over time you may manage to transfer a significant portion of your business free from gift tax.Clearly, the disadvantage of relying solely on this method of transferring your business is the amount of time neces sary to complete the transfer of your entire estate. In addition, Section 6166 of the Internal Revenue Code allows any estate taxes incurred because of the inclusion of a closely held business in your estate to be deferred for 5 years (with interest-only payments for the first four years and interest plus principal due in the fifth year), and then paid in annual installments over a period of up to 10 years.See disclaimer on final page January 1, 20XX Page 3 of 9 Grantor retained annuity trusts or grantor retained unitrusts A more sophisticated business succession tool is a grantor retained annuity trust (GRAT) or a grantor retained unitrust (GRUT). GRAT/GRUTs are irrevocable trusts to which you transfer appreciating assets while retaining an income payment for a set period of time. At either the end of the payment period or your death, the assets in the trust pass to the other trust beneficiaries (the remainder beneficiaries). The value of the retained income is subtracted from the v alue of the property transferred to the trust (i. e. , a share of the business), so if you live beyond the specified income period, the business may be ultimately transferred to the next generation at a reduced value for estate tax or gift tax purposes. A more sophisticated business succession tool is a grantor retained annuity trust (GRAT) or a grantor retained unitrust (GRUT). Self-canceling installment notesA self-canceling installment note (SCIN) allows you to transfer the business to the buyer in exchange for a promissory note. The buyer must make a series of payments to you under that note. A provision in the note states that at your death, the remaining payments will be canceled. SCINs provide for a lifetime income stream and avoidance of gift tax and estate tax similar to private annuities. Unlike private annuities, SCINs give you a security interest in the transferred business. Family limited partnershipsA family limited partnership can also assist in transferring your busi ness interest to family members. First, you establish a partnership with both general and limited partnership interests. Then, you transfer the business to this partnership. You retain the general partnership interest for yourself, allowing you to maintain control over the day-to-day operation of the business. Over time, you gift the limited partnership interest to family members. The value of the gifts may be eligible for valuation discounts as a minority interest and for lack of marketability. If so, you may successfully transfer much of your business to your heirs at significant transfer tax savings. Private annuities A private annuity is the sale of property in exchange for a promise to make payments to you for the rest of your life. Here, you transfer complete ownership of the business to family members or another party (the buyer). The buyer in turn makes a promise to make periodic payments to you for the rest of your life (a single life annuity) or for your life and the life o f a second person (a joint and survivor annuity).A joint and survivor annuity provides payments until the death of the last survivor; that is, payments continue as long as either the husband or wife is still alive. Again, because a private annuity is a sale and not a gift, it allows you to remove assets from your estate without incurring gift tax or estate tax. Until very recently, exchanging property for an unsecured private annuity allowed you to spread out any gain realized, deferring capital gains tax. Proposed regulations have effectively eliminated this benefit for most exchanges, however. If youre considering a private annuity, be sure to talk to a tax professional. See disclaimer on final page January 1, 20XX Page 4 of 9 Grantor Retained Annuity Trust (GRAT) Definition A grantor retained annuity trust (GRAT) is an irrevocable trust into which a grantor makes a one-time transfer of property, and in which the grantor retains the right to receive a fixed amount of principal and interest at least annually for a specified term of years. At the end of the retained nterest period or upon the death of the grantor, whichever is earlier, the property remaining in the trust passes to the remainder beneficiaries or remains in trust for their benefit. A transfer of property to an irrevocable trust is a taxable gift. The value of the gift on which gift tax is imposed is generally its fair market value. However, because the grantor retains an interest in a GRAT, the value of the transfer is discounted; gift tax is imposed only on the remainder interest (and any gift tax due may be sheltered by the grantors $1 million lifetime gift tax exemption). This taxable value is calculated using an interest rate provided by the IRS (known as the discount rate or Section 7520 rate), which is based on current interest rates and changes monthly. This interest rate assumes the GRAT property will earn a certain rate of return during the annuity period. Any actual return that exceeds t he assumed return passes to the remainder beneficiaries gift and estate tax free. Investment performance, therefore, is central to this strategy. Key tradeoffs If the GRAT property underperforms the Section 7520 rate, no tax savings is achieved (and if the GRAT is depleted, no property is transferred to the remainder beneficiaries) If the GRAT property underperforms the Section 7520 rate, gift taxes paid and/or any applicable exclusion amount used will be wasted (though the amounts would be minimal)If the grantor does not outlive the term of years, any property remaining in the GRAT is includable in the grantors gross estate for federal estate tax purposes If the GRAT is unsuccessful, any costs incurred to create and maintain the GRAT will be wasted â⬠¢ â⬠¢ How is it implemented? â⬠¢ â⬠¢ â⬠¢ â⬠¢ Hire an experienced attorney to draft the GRAT document Have property that is transferred to GRAT professionally appraised Transfer property to GRAT (i. e. , retitle assets) File gift tax returns For a GRAT to be successful: â⬠¢ â⬠¢ â⬠¢ The grantor must outlive the term of years The GRAT property must outperform the Section 7520 rate The GRAT document must be properly drafted Potential tax advantages of a GRAT include: Because of the retained interest, the value of the transfer for federal gift tax purposes may be discounted Principal remaining in the GRAT at the end of the term of years is removed from the grantors gross estate for federal estate tax purposes Interest (i. e. , appreciation and/or earnings) remaining in the GRAT at the end of the term of years passes to the remainder beneficiaries federal gift tax free â⬠¢ â⬠¢ See disclaimer on final page January 1, 20XX Page 5 of 9 Grantor Retained Unitrust (GRUT) DefinitionA grantor retained unitrust (GRUT) is an irrevocable trust into which a grantor makes a one-time transfer of property, and in which the grantor retains the right to receive a variable amount of principal and interest (based on a fixed percentage) at least annually for a specified term of years. At the end of the retained interest period or upon the death of the grantor, whichever is earlier, the property remaining in the trust passes to the remainder beneficiaries or remains in trust for their benefit. A transfer of property to an irrevocable trust is a taxable gift. The value of the gift on which gift tax is imposed is generally its fair market value. However, because the grantor retains an interest in a GRUT, the value of the transfer is discounted; gift tax is imposed only on the remainder interest (and any gift tax due may be sheltered by the grantors $1 million lifetime gift tax exemption). This taxable value is calculated using an interest rate provided by the IRS (known as the discount rate or Section 7520 rate), which is based on current interest rates and changes monthly. This interest rate assumes the GRUT property will earn a certain rate of return during the annuity perio d.Any actual return that exceeds the assumed return passes to the remainder beneficiaries gift and estate tax free. Investment performance, therefore, is central to this strategy. A GRUT is the same type of trust as a grantor retained annuity trust (GRAT), except that with a GRAT, the grantor receives a fixed annuity amount rather than a variable unitrust payment. Because of this, the grantor of a GRUT receives more income than with a GRAT, reducing the potential for tax savings. And, because the unitrust payment must be recalculated each year, the cost to administer a GRUT may be greater than with a GRAT.Another important difference between these two trusts is that unlike a GRAT, a GRUT cant be zeroed out, and therefore a taxable gift always results. Potential tax advantages of a GRUT include: â⬠¢ Because of the retained interest, the value of the transfer for federal gift tax purposes may be discounted Principal remaining in the GRUT at the end of the term of years is removed from the grantors gross estate for federal estate tax purposes Interest (i. e. , appreciation and/or earnings) remaining in the GRUT at the end of the term of years passes to the remainder beneficiaries federal gift tax free â⬠¢ â⬠¢ Key tradeoffs If the GRUT property underperforms the Section 7520 rate, there is no excess and no tax savings is achieved (and if the GRUT is depleted, no property is transferred to the remainder beneficiaries) If the GRUT property underperforms the Section 7520 rate, gift taxes paid and/or any applicable exclusion amount used will be wasted (though the amounts would be minimal) If the grantor does not outlive the term of years, any property remaining in the GRUT is includable in the grantors gross estate for federal estate tax purposes If the GRUT is unsuccessful, any costs incurred to create and maintain the GRUT will be wasted â⬠¢ â⬠¢ How is it implemented? â⬠¢ â⬠¢ â⬠¢ â⬠¢ Hire an experienced attorney to draft the GRUT document Have property that is transferred to the GRUT professionally appraised Transfer property to GRUT (i. e. , retitle assets) File gift tax returns For a GRUT to be successful: â⬠¢ â⬠¢ â⬠¢ The grantor must outlive the term of years The GRUT property must outperform the Section 7520 rate The GRUT document must be properly drafted See disclaimer on final page January 1, 20XX Page 6 of 9 Planning for Succession of a Business InterestBusiness Succession Planning Alternatives Lifetime Gifts If you want to: Sell your business interest If you want to: Give business to your children If you want to: Sell business to your children If you want to: Bequest Lifetime Sale Estate Sale Buy-Sell Agreement Buy-sell agreement can be used to guarantee the sale of your business Not appropriate Not appropriate You may be able to sell your business outright-but there is no guarantee You can control the timing and size of the gifts You control the Not appropriate size of the gift through y our willYour estate may be able to sell your business outrightbut there is no guarantee Not appropriate Not appropriate Can be used in Not appropriate You can control conjunction timing of salebut sale is not with sale guaranteed You can control timing of salebut sale is not guaranteed Your child could buy from your estate-but sale is not guaranteed Value of business must be included in your estate Buy-sell can be used to guarantee your childs option to buy your interest Value of business must be included in your estate, but the buy-sell can help establish that valueCan be used to Will not reduce the minimize value of your estate Minimize value value of your of your estate estate and maximize gift tax exclusion See disclaimer on final page January 1, 20XX Select Options for Preserving a Family Business for Children Private Annuity Self-Canceling Installment Note Lifetime Gifts Yes Generally, yes Yes, to the extent the fair value of the business does not exceed the present value of t he annuity Yes No To the extent of the annual gift tax exclusion and the lifetime gift tax exemptionFamily Limited Partnership Yes To the extent of the annual gift tax exclusion and the lifetime gift tax exemption Value of gifts may be discounted Yes, but not to the extent payments are received back into your estate â⬠¢ Generally, payments are return of basis and/or interest (ordinary income) â⬠¢ You pay income tax on interest ncome â⬠¢ You pay income tax on interest income Yes, but children do not receive a step up in cost basis Yes, but children do not receive a step up in cost basis Payments are return of basis, capital gain, and/or interest (ordinary income) â⬠¢ â⬠¢ Yes, but not to the extent payments are received back into your estate Yes, but not to the extent payments are received back into your estate You pay no income tax on annuity payments You pay taxes on all income earned by the trust Shifts future appreciation to children Yes Yes, to the extent the fair value of the business does not exceed the present value of the annuityGrantor Retained Annuity Trust Provides liquidity? It is the outrageous claim of a slave.? These are the words, of Toni Morrison, used to describe the actions of Sethe, the central character in the novel. She, a former slave, chooses to kill her baby girl rather then let her live a life in slavery. In preventing her from the physical and emotional horrors of slavery, Sethe has put herself in to a realm of physical and emotional pain: guilt. And in understanding her guilt we can start to conceive her motivations for killing her third nameless child. Did Beloveds death come out of love or selfish pride? In preventing her child from going into slavery, Sethe, too, protected herself, she prevented herself from re-entering captivity. In examining Sethes character we can see that her motivations derive from her deep love towards her children, and from the lack of love for herself. Sethes children are her only good quality. Her children are a part of her and in killing one she kills a part of herself. What hinders over Sethe is her refusal to accept responsibility for her babys death. Does she do this because she is selfishness or because it need not be justified? Sethes love is clearly displayed by sparing her daughter from a horrific life, yet, Sethe refuses to acknowledge that her show of compassion is also Throughout the work, seems to have two separate identities, which affect her actions. When reunited with Paul D., Sethe recalls her reactions to School Teachers arrival with no mention to her daughters death. Oh, no. I wasnt going back there [Sweet Home]. I went to jail instead?(42) Sethe believes she made a moral stand in not letting herself be taken into custody. In her statement she has done two things, she has disa... How can you tell if youââ¬â¢re just being paranoid or if you really should be worried? Here are a few signs that your worry is justified. 1. You recently screwed up.A screw-up isnââ¬â¢t necessarily the harbinger of doom. But if you did have a big mistake in your recent past, thatââ¬â¢s probably one thing to consider.2. Youââ¬â¢ve been iced out.You suddenly find yourself no longer in the loop. Youââ¬â¢re hearing about company news from people well below your pay grade. Not a great sign. And if your supervisor or mentor recently left the department? Even worse.3. No one will look at you.None of your colleagues are making eye contact. Youââ¬â¢re being ignored. People go out of their way not to cross you in the halls or meet you in the break room. And you find people seem to be whispering when theyââ¬â¢re in your ear shot. You could just be a pariah, but itââ¬â¢s more likely that they know something you donââ¬â¢t know.4. There have been mergers and acquisitions.Your company just merged or got bought out. Layoffs are probably to be on the table at some point in the future. This doesnââ¬â¢t necessarily mean youââ¬â¢re going to be fired, but if itââ¬â¢s one of many of these symptoms, then you should probably start looking for another job.5. Youââ¬â¢re being set up to fail. The last task you got assigned was actually impossible. Or maybe your responsibility has been completely curtailed. Either way, you can perceive that youââ¬â¢ve been fully written off.6. Youââ¬â¢ve been downsized.Has your office just been moved somewhere pretty subpar? Or your cubicle split in half to accommodate another employee? They donââ¬â¢t value your space, they probably donââ¬â¢t value you all that much either. Or maybe your pay has just taken a cut- or been frozen.7. Theyââ¬â¢re hiring your replacement. You found a posting that matches your job description on a job search site or the company boards. That isâ⬠¦ wellâ⬠¦ not a good sign.8. Thereââ¬â¢s a clear paper trail.Your boss doesnââ¬â¢t have any conversations with you now in either passing or about work. Thereââ¬â¢s always an email chain. As if theyââ¬â¢re trying to cover their bases. Or perhaps your relationship is just getting weird. Either way, weird boss behavior is never a good sign. The debate surrounds the problems associated with these views, however. Hence the purpose we must now address is to radically change the way people in Honk Kong regard their water supply. The current thinking is problematic on a number of fronts. However, it can be seen from history that there was a time when everyone in Hong Kong drank water from the tap. So what has changed Bottled water is now the preferred choice, despite the fact that tap water is for all intents and purposes, free. Hong Kong residents try to justify this by assuming the following: There is a counter-argument to this, but it seems to fall on deaf ears. In the end convenience seems to be a major factor, as with all consumer products. Here are some of the counter arguments: (South China Morning Post, 2007) In addition to the above plus point and minus points, other factors need to be considered by the consumer. For instance buyers need to be aware that tax is being charged on the cost of a bottle of water. The long term solution of course is to improve the general water supply quality. Re-education needs to take place as too many people feel that bottled water is the only option. In the end a restriction policy may have to be put in place to make the production cost higher. Eventually this will make it more difficult for the end consumer to purchaser. The only problem with this approach is that it is not guaranteed to have the desired effect. Chapter 2 The Change Process So, how do we change the habits of approximately "6.92 million" (Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, 2008), Hong Kong residents Well, if we follow Kurt Lewin's model there are a few things we can do. We will take this one aspect at a time, and see where we can fit in an appropriate solution or scenario fitted for the stage in question. Unfreeze. The objective here is to establish a good relationship with the people involved, and enable others to realize that the present behaviours are not effective. As with all change of a radical or not-so-radical nature, we would need to minimize the resistance to change. Easier said than done perhaps In some films and books you often read about masses of people who have had their perception of a situation changed just because of a single appealing speech. There have been rather convincing evidences to this claim. In fact, science has successfully documented many proofs of the theoryââ¬â¢s parallel notion to the basic principles of physics. So, in considering spirituality, faith or religion, as against science, evolution, and the old-Earth creation, which way should you go? Personally, I have been through a lot of stern confrontations in the past in so far as my faith, my spirituality is concerned. Due to the fact that religion and Christianity have been made known to man for so many years, there is a sense of inevitability in the way people conceive God. For me, I would not say that I do not personally believe in God, but in the same manner, I have my own questions about life, my existence, and the Creation. The doubts could come from various facets. Firstly, the question about whether the Bible is indeed written by God, or by the prophet who He [God] has provided vision to. Logically, there could be no answer to these questions because before the Bible has been introduced to humanity, there was no pre-existing concept about God. Everything was purely a sight of nature, and even if we go back to the times of the prophets, we could not discern whether these prophets really did exist because the only account we have that tells of their pre-historical existence is the Bible. Hence, the Bible indeed requires faith, a strong faith. Following this argument, sometimes I tried to reconcile science and faith by transporting the findings of science to the accounts found in the Bible. But this is just entirely futile in that science and faith are two contradictory entities: Faith is in the light of faith; science is in the light of evidence. But I believe in both; hence, it places me in a crossro ad where a very difficult decision should be made. If only I intended to be partial at my discernment over this particular matter, it would have been a stumbling upshot for me. No belief needs to be discarded; both can co-exist but they, faith and science, should not be related in all essence. ` Sometimes, since I somehow consider myself a believer, God is rather real to me. In my walk with God, I would not say that everything was a walk-in-the-park or a bed of roses; there were also some stumbling encounters that really shook my little faith and question Godââ¬â¢s promises mentioned in the Bible. For instance, God said in John 3:16, ââ¬Å"For God so loved the word that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.â⬠(New International Version, John 3:16). At times, this verse could be very doubtful. Problem has been and will always be part of a personââ¬â¢s life. So, normally for a believer such as I, there is a insti nctive resort to God; but despite all of the confessions and sacrifices that you do, still you do not receive what you asked for. But it is not all sadness and confusion though. I have been through a lot of joyous moments in my walk with God. I know I am not the perfect believer but through time, I have learned to value Godââ¬â¢s love to humanity and His unending provision to His people. Sometimes, I also reach lofty heights of faith. In those instances, I have realized that belief in God and His promises are not merely determined by how much logic you have in your Hattie Tricehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08647167614394798415noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-295041434384858414.post-13103612364113966382019-11-17T10:55:00.001-08:002019-11-17T10:55:07.765-08:0019th Century Philippines Essay Example for Free 19th Century Philippines Essay The Philippines was governed by Spain through a viceroy from Mexico. The highest office was that of the Governor-General, the chief executive of the Spanish colonial government, appointed by the Spanish king. The town is managed by a gobernadorcillo. The barangay is the smallest political unit under a cabeza de barangay. The social hierarchy was in this order: at the top were the peninsulares or the Spaniards from Spain, next were the insulares, Spaniards born in the Philippines and also called Filipinos, the mestizos, born of Spanish and Chinese descent, at the bottom were the indios, the local inhabitants. A total of 300 insurections and rebellions by the Filipinos all over the achipelago were recorded in the more than 3000 years of Spanish colonialization. 19th century was defined by liberal thinking for the following reasons: 1)Mexico rebelled against Spain and this brought revolutionary thinking to Manila; 2) the opening of the Suez Canal made the trip to Manila from Europe faster thereby bringing liberal ideas to the Philippines; and 3) rise of the middle class ? Liberalism is a set of political beliefs which puts primary consideration on the freedom and rights of the individual which includes the freedom of speck, of expression and of the press. In 1869, Carlos Maria de la Torre became the first liberal governor-general of the Philippines. For two year, until 1871, he instituted liberal reforms that benefited the Filipino middle class. ?Padre Jose Burgos campaigned for the Filipinization of the parochial churches in the Philippines and asked for the expulsion of friars back to Spain. ?The Cavite Mutiny of 1872 was used to condemn Frs. Burgos, Zamora, and Gomez to death by garrote or musketry. ?The martyrdom of Gomburza was winessed by Paciano Rizal, Joseââ¬â¢s brother. Rizalââ¬â¢s first novel Noli Me Tangere was dedicated to the martyred priests. Economic Conditions ?The economic policies of Gov. Gen. Jose Basco y Vargas opened the Philippines to the world market. ?These economic policies were the galleon trade and the monopolies of tobacco, wine and gambling. ?The galleon trade made Mexico Philippinesââ¬â¢ trade partner. The route of the trade was from manila to Acapulco and back. ?From Acapulco, Mexico the Philippines got its silver and gold coins while the Philippines exported tobacco, wine, sugar and goods from China. The Philippines was the bridge of Asia to Europe and this trade allowed the emergence of the Filipino middle class composed mainly by insulares and mestizos. The encomienda system was transformed into Hacienda system wherein the vast tracks of land were devoted for the planting of single crops for export. (e. g. Ilocos for tobacco, Negros for sugar cane, etc. The first banks in the Philippines were managed by Spanish friars knows as Obras Pias. This banks lent money to the members of middle class which were used by them as capital for their export business. The first rural bank established was the Rodriguez Bank. The Mercado family was a typical middle class family of the 19th century who rented land from the Dominican friars. Social Conditions ?Schools and universities were opened and managed by Spanish friars. The most popular among them were the Ateneo de Municipal under the Jesuit fathers and Universidad de Santo Tomas under the Dominican friars. ?There were schools for boys and girls. For boys, schools teach history, languages, humanities, medicine, theology and law. While for girls, shools offer courses for dress making, home making, cooking and gardening.
